A cold and wet night at Newport stadium was unfortunately a " after the Lord Mayors show " performance! . A comprehensive victory over league leaders Penrhiwcieber on Saturday was met with defeat here against bottom club Porthcawl .
Only one change from Saturdays line up saw Tom Hooper replace Jody Mcintosh who dropped to the bench .
The little bit of good fortune that has been with the Steelmen over the last few games seemed to disappear as ; two one on ones with the keeper for top scorer Marcus Power were saved plus a header was superbly tipped around the post , a Lee Morris strike came back off the crossbar , Richie Shire missed a side foot volley with just the keeper to beat and Mike Vaux managed to put his effort over the crossbar from on the line . Mike Aviss only lasted 20 minutes after suffering a rib injury and was replaced by Leighton Golledge and his cetre half partner Mike Binning was sent off with 20 minutes remaining , all in all not the luckiest of evenings !!!
It all started so well when outstanding centre half Binning played a one two with Shier on the edge of the box and side footed the return home on 14 minutes but the opposition made a mockery of there lowly position by playing with grit and endeavour and by half time were slightly on top of the game without creating too much in front of goal .
HT 1-0
They had the best possible start to the second half when an unstoppable volley from 25 yards flew into the top corner , despite the better of the possesion it was the steelmen who had the better chances as previously mentioned but the failure to take these chances plus the Binning dismissal added up to the worst possible finish , Shier gave a poor balll away in the middle of the park in the 89th minute and the striker was fed and scored from 18 yards.
FT 1-2
Next is a big game at nearby Tredegar Town , truly a big game .
