First things first lets get out the way how the Manager , the players and the club in general have been let down by a few individuals over the last 7 days , its not worth going into detail about and It wont be mentioned again the club continues regardless

Only 13 players were fit and available today and unfortunately one of those was a 43 year old having to play in goal !!!

Matt Pimm and Steve Perszewski were unavailable , Denis Spiteri and James Cairns suspended , Mike Binning and Mike Vaux injured ,
Manager Laurence Owen selected himself in goal because he couldnt find anyone else in Newport who could catch a ball , Nick Aherne moved to right back , Luke Fernquest to left back , Ashley Sully to the right of midfield , midfielder Luke Palmer filled in at centre half and Matt Currie returned to the left wing , Matt Smith and Danny penn made up the bench.
On a very warm day the Steelmen started strongly immediately settling into their passing game and centre halfs Golledge and Palmer controlled any long balls
Llanwern opened the scoring with a superb goal on 17 minutes a Hooper pass found Currie out wide and his superb ball found the on rushing Mike Aviss who volleyed home from 10 yards . Currie nearly made it 2 on 25 minutes when his 25 yard curler struck the post .
A fine fingertip save on 27 minutes from Owen kept Llanwern in front but he could do nothing about the equaliser on 44 minutes when the centre forward got above Aherne to steer a powerful header into the bottom corner .
HT 1-1
For 15 minutes after the break the home side had the better of the game without troubling Owen . as the game progressed Power had 3 good chances and Aviss 1 but they failed to beat the home keeper.
The game turned with 30 minutes to go with the introduction of two subs Debono for Maesteg and Danny Penn fo Sully for Llanwern , Debono immediately got involved in the game showing good touches but unfortunately became over aggressive and arguing with other players and when seeking retribution got a yellow card on 70 minutes and then vented his anger on the referee and got a second yellow for abusive language.
Llanwern seemed like they would come away with a very good and deserved point but a corner from Aviss on 86 minutes found Danny Penn whos Bullett header crashed into the top corner to seal a superb victory in a backs to the wall day !!!!

FT Maesteg 1-2 Llanwern AFC

Hopefully , Pimm, Binning, Perszewski , Vaux , Spiteri and a keeper will be available for next weekends cup game at UWIC , the 13 players today were a credit to themselves and the club.

and Remember the old saying " THE PENN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD "
