Without a game of football for six weeks what a relief it was to at last get a game played .
Even the lack of competitive action didnt assist availability with Matthew Pimm , Kieron Porter and Matthew Currie ( work ) , Mike Binning ( holiday ) and Nick Aherne and the unlucky Troy Quarterly both confirmed as season long absentees all missing,
A new and different formation started the game and a few players operated in unacustomed positions . The Steelmen started well and the crisp and fluid passing game was evident even without kicking a ball in anger since well before christmas,
Maesteg were skippered by ex football league player , frontman Leone Jeanne whos touch and close control had evidently not deserted him.
A few half chances fell to the Steelmen but a lack of decent finishing from Power and Golledge prevented them opening the scoring . On 26 minutes the visitors took the lead after a mistake from midfield veteran Mattie Smith , as he chested the ball down on the edge of the box he attempted to pass back to defender Tom Hooper but his pass was read by the Park striker who rifled his shot into the top corner of the net ,, what a finish !! It was Nicky Church's only touch of the half .
Somewhat fortunately Llanwern were level on 37 minutes when the lively front three of Fernquest , Power and Vaux linked up and Fernquests cross ?? went straight into the far posts top corner ,

HT 1-1

The Steelmen started the second half very brightly , pushing the opposition backwards . Defender Tom Hooper was causing problems pushing down the right hand side and linking with Vaux and Power . A succession of corners and free kicks couldnt grab a breakthrough and a superb Hooper cross was met spectacularly by Power on the volley sliding in but his effort went wide . The influential Matt smith was replaced by Ryan Corey for his debut on his return to the club and he immediately began to make an impact and on 68 minutes a mirrored version of an earlier move saw a super cross from Hooper met on the volley by the lively Power and crash the ball into the back of the net for 2-1.
The game still went from end to end and the impressive Park central defenders kept the Llanwern front men from increasing the lead and only half chances appeared at each end , Todd Shipley replaced cramp victim Mike Vaux late on and the game ended .

FT
Llanwern 2-1 Maesteg

A much welcomed game played and a much welcome three points , the game was a good spectacle for the watching crowd and the three officials should be complimented for their contributions to the 90 minutes .
Next up is a real tough game on Wednesday evening verses a very capable manager in Barrie Hughes and his Cwmbran Town side fresh from 3 consecutive victories .
