An unchanged side from the Porthcawl fixture with the exception of James Cairns coming back after suspension in goal for the injured Craig Margetts was a very big positive for the arrival of a good student team from UWIC .
The game was a real spectacle for any neutrals but maybe not so for both Managers.
Llanwern were a goal down within 5 minutes when an excellent chip from 30 yards could only be helped onto the crossbar by Cairns and thefollow up was knocked into the net from inside the six yard box. The game was played at a fair pace and the ball switched around by both sides crisply but it was Llanwern who equalised on 20 minutes when a delightful through ball from Mike Vaux found Mike Aviss who ran onto the ball and sweetly finished from the edge of the box into the bottom corner .
HT 1-1
After a good first half it was unfortunately a repeat of the Llwydcoed game with the Steelmen somehow finding themselves 3-1 down on 49 minutes !!!! Mike Aviss had a great chance to get it back to 3-2 on 57 minutes when he was through on goal after a poor goalkick but he fired his shot straight at the keeper. Then keeper Cairns saw yellow and gave away a penalty as he brought down the student striker as he ran across the penalty area , fortunately for the steelmen the penalty hit the post and rebounded to safety.
Things got even worse on 60 minutes when Aviss and Vaux 4 minutes later both recieved red cards . it was realbacks to the wall stuff now but the Steelmen continued to cause their opponents problems going forward and on 69 minutes a deep cross into the box found skipper Richie Shier whos header nestled into the net for 3-2. Marcus Power twice went close on 74 and 76 minutes when he normally would have scored but a save from the keeper and a shot narrowly wide seemed like it wasnt going to be his day?
Matt Currie was a constant thorn to the opposition and his constant attacks paid dividends on 79 minutes when a maisy run into the box saw him beat 2 defenders but he was brought down from behind and the referee immediately pointed to the spot and showed another red card .It was Power who stepped up to take the pressure penalty and he sent the keeper the wrong way to claim his 9th goal of the season . An edgy last six or so minutes saw the game completely stretched but it was played out to anentertaining draw
FT 3-3 .
what a comeback iagainst all odds ! when the going gets tough !!!
