A very wet , cold and miserabkle night at Spytty Stadiumand the weather was not very good either !!!
What a difference in two performances , Despite defeat in the cup last Saturday at high flying division 1 leaders Goytre the performance was pleasing , although for the opening 20 minutes and the first 25 minutes of the second half of this game we played some nice attractive football we otherwise seemed sluggish and incapable of communicating and breaking down the opposition in the final third and the wrong passing option and too many touches around the edge of the box cost us dear.
The much spoke about availability crisis is still present with Danny Penn , Mike Vaux , Mike Binning , Luke Fernquest , Matt Smith , Nick Aherne , Troy Quarterly and Craig Margetts unavailable but Mike Aviss , Matt Currie and Richie Shier returned and as always quoted any Llanwern side selected should be able to match most sides in the second division regardless of availability ,
A penalty for handball by Mike Aviss off a corner gave the visitors the lead om 24 minutes followed by a scrambled goalmouth second 5 minutes later and a shell shocked Llanwern were 3-0 down on 46 minutes when another penalty for a Palmer foul was just about scored despite keeper Church making a decent effort to keep it out .
Llanwern again came out with purpose and crisp passing and dominated possesion and it took the opposition 19 minutes to get the ball in the Llanwern box .
It was 3-1 on 66 minutes when an Ashley Sully ball into the box was spilled by the keeper and was signalled over the line by the assistant referee. The Steelmen continued to push forward but were caught on the break by the lively Quins attack and were 4-2 down on
71 Minutes . Golledge (hamstring) and Spiteri (back) were really struggling and had to be replaced . On 80 minutes it was penalty number three but this time Church made a super save .It was 5-2 on 88 minutes and game over .
On reflection as stated earlier in the report the side played well in spells but without a cutting edge and too many silly mistakes cost dearly. The scoreline was very flattering to the visitors but it must be said they fully deserved their victory .
There is now a 10 day break for the international weekend and the away fixture verses Porth will hopefully see a near full squad available for the first time with the exception of Danny Penn who is suspended and two long term casualties .
It is now time to show our quality and come up with performances to match !!!
