After the disappointment of the defeat at Newport YMCA on Wednsday evening Manager Laurence Owen made a few changes , out were Steve Perszewski ,Matt Currie ( unavailable ) and Nicky Aherne , Luke Palmer and Ashley Sully drped down to the bench and there were starts for Matt Smith , Luke Fernquest , Richie Shier ad Carl Baugh .
A different system was also order of the day for the Steelmen . The local derby was as expected keenly contested from the whistle and a decent headed chance fell to both sides in the opening 20 minutes both efforts going wide of the upright .Luke Fernqest had a very decent chance on 22 minutes when a good move saw him have a free strike from 12 yards but unfortunately it was on his weaker foot and the ball was comfortably smothered by the Crows keeper . A floated freekick from 35 yards out wide sailed in the wind and struck the top of the Llanwern crossbar on 23 minutes and 28 minutes it was Llanwern;s turn to strike the woodwork when a Marcus Power strike thundered the crossbar from 12 yards and a Mike Aviss follow up header was parried away from the stretching Crows keeper ..Centre Back Binning picked up a yellow card on 30 minutes for what the referee said was constant infringement of an opponent when challenging in the air ( to the bemusement of most ) as He and his partner Carl Baugh dominated the arial battle!!
On 39 minutes a powerful clearence header from Spiteri was picked up by Shier who found Mike Vaux whos pass into the box to Power was measured , he dummied inside his marker and drilled a sweet effort low into the far corner of the net .

HT Cwmbran 0-1 Llanwern

The second half was started again at a decent pace and Llanwern were dominating most phases of the game as they had in the last 20 minutes of the first half , Keeper Chris Hart had a quiet afternoon but dealt well as usual with incoming crosses . Fernquest limped off on 60 minutes with a calf injury and was replaced by Matt Pimm who immediately made an impact working well with Power , Aviss and Shier .
Power could have put the game to bed on 66 minutes when he beat the offside trap and lobbed the onrushing keeper only to see his effort agonisingly drop outside the far post.
It was that man Power who eventually ended the contest on 73 minutes when a delightful ball from Vaux and a deft first touch from the striker saw him swivel and beat the keeper for 2-0.
The only negative was Binning picked up a second yellow on 80 minutes and his marching orders for a mistimed challenge leaving the Steelmen down to 10 men but they coped adequately to the final whistle. We hope the injured Cwmbran players injury is not too serious as he had to recieve hospital treatment !

FT

Cwmbran Town 0-2 Llanwern AFC

A big improvement on last Wednedays performance but we still need to further up our game as we go into another two local derbies . Again the referee was a talking point but this time for the wrong reasons as he really didnt have a good game and seemed very inconsistent and some decisions were somewhat bemusing.to say the least !!!
