After a long abscence on the playing scene the task of tackling the league leaders was Llanwern's at Newport Stadum. It would have to be done without the Ashley Sully and Andrew Larcombe who were both late withdrawals with groin injuries and Ricci Morgan serving a one match ban .
The pitch was not as good as it has been but that has come from some poor decisions by the other tennants of the stadium playing on it when it is not playable !!
The game started like a typical local derby , fast and furious and end to end , a corner on the right on 19 minutes from Pearce saw debutant Scott Lanyon drill a header towards the top corner of the net only for the ball to smash into the defender on the line and the rebound was fired over , two minutes later another cross from the right hand side beat the Undy defence but skipper Shier saw his header go wide of the post from 8 yards out . Stretcher then made a neat save in the six yard box smothering the ball .
The opening goal came on 23 minutes when a run into the box ended when defender Screen upended the attacker and the spot kick was given and despatched for 1-0. Ten minutes later controversy raised its head as the referee gave Undy another penalty when he adjudged Screen to have handled the ball in the box , it was clear to everyone that the ball had not struck his hand but the kick was given and despatched again . The hosts found themselves 2-0 down with less than 30 minutes gone but probably just edging the game . There were no further chances up to the break
HT 0-2
Again the big talking point of the half involved the referee !! a Wayne Morley run at the Undy backline on 57 minutes saw him beat two players and get into the box where he appeared to be upended with the ball still in his possesion but the official again shocked the majority as he waved play on !! This really seemed to knock the wind out of the home team. Matters got worse for Llanwern as skipper Richie Shier had to be withdrawn due to illness and a tight hamstring , he was replaced by Pimm and Lanyon and Morley were replaced by Southan and Poole .
The next big blow was keeper Stretcher pulling a hamstring and was then unable to move off his line and in the latter stages of the half Undy added two more goals , The home side continued to push on but despite a lot of possesion around the box failed to trouble Undy's keeper .
FT 0-4
A few very controversial decisions from the referee certainly assisted the final result but the league leaders deserved the win and worryingly for Llanwern they failed to score for the third consecutive game despite creating decent chances .
Stretcher , Larcombe , Sully , Shier all remain doubts for the return encounter next week .
