History
17 Aug 2007

The club was formed in 1963 as Spencer Works AFC and joined the Newport and District, winning the Premier "B" championship in 1967/8. With the opening of the clubhouse and playing fields in 1969/70, the club won the Gwent Premier League title in 1970/1 and 1971/2 and was elected to the Welsh League for the 1972/3 season, where it has remained ever since.

They won promotion in their first season (as runners-up) and two seasons later they finished as First Division champions and were promoted to the Premier Division. After two seasons there, however, they were relegated back to Division One, where they remined for the next sixtenn years.

In 1988, they changed their name to Llanwern AFC to reflect the changed named of the Works that it represented. This co-incided with and improvement in the clubs' fortunes and promotion back to the leagues' top division at the end of 1992/3 season. This was followed by the club building a stand (1993) and full ground enclosure (1994), all by its' own efforts, to meet the ground criteria of the Welsh League. After five season in the top divison (Division One) they were relegated back to Division Two in 1997/8. However they returned to the top flight in 2001 as runners-up and a year later, they for the first time ever, won the Welsh League's League Cup.

Problems over the sale of part of the Corus site, including the sports club and grounds, led to the decision in 2003 to re-locate to the Newport Stadium. The move co-incided with two successive seasons of relegation due to the break-up of the successful 2002 team and the short lived reign of two managers . The appointment of Manager Laurence Owen in 2004 has seen us rise again and his style of management has got the best out of a very good squad , it saw us finish runners-up in the Welsh League Third Division and gain promotion to the Second Division in 2007 and gain a sixth placed finish in the Division in 2008 and a fifth placed finish in 2009 . The 09 /10 season saw the league ludicrously relegate the bottom eight teams under a new restructuring project and we find ourselves playing Division three football in season 2010 / 11.
Manager Laurence Owen has commited himself to the club for another season and has brought in former Llanwern player and ex Albion and Civil manager Martin Elwick to work with him as assistant manager with the hope of having an impact in division three for season 2011 / 12.
As usual, our thanks to all our spectators and to our sponsors, whose financial support over the years has enabled our club to maintain its position as one of the leading football clubs in Gwent and South Wales. With their support, we continue to represent the Llanwern Works and the surrounding areas and to offer the young men of this area the chance to play football at Welsh League level, the highest level of football in South and West Wales.

To all our sponsors and supporters, we thank you for your help and support
